The Acting Program At...

  The Theatre Program at Fairfield offers students a liberal arts education balanced between the theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline. The theory explored in the classroom is put into practice in Theatre Fairfield which is the production wing of the Theatre Program. As a theatre major or minor, you'll expand your knowledge through participation in Theatre Fairfield productions, where you'll be given the unique opportunity of directing, designing, writing, and acting in various styles of theatre. As a Theatre student, within your 4 years at Fairfield, you'll be exposed to a wide range of production types and styles: musicals, comedies, serious plays, period plays, contemporary plays, and original works. Opportunities for Theatre students at Fairfield abound.

If you complete a major or minor concentration in theatre, you'll know how to put on a show from conception through strike and have a broad, liberal education. You'll have the benefit of instruction from theatre professionals in acting, dance, design, directing, playwrighting, production, and stagecraft, and have studied with teachers specializing in history, literature, and criticism of the stage.

In 2009-10, the Theatre Program is hosting a Distinguished Artistic Residency with Barbra Berlovitz and Sonya Berlovitz, guest artists from the multiple award-winning Theatre de la Jeune Lune. Director Barbra and costume designer Sonya will work with Theatre Fairfield in creating a contemporary version of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, which will respond to current global issues while retaining Shakespeare's text. To help you become well-rounded, the theatre program emphasizes the development of good communication skills, which are essential to work in theatre as well as in all aspects of life. Courses stress the development of written, verbal, and artistic abilities. The program also advocates double majors and/or minors with other academic disciplines such as English, psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, communication, and modern languages, as well as various business majors.
