Learn about... Grinnell
The New York Film Academy was founded in 1992 on a belief that a top quality education in filmmaking should be accessible to anyone with the drive and ambition to make films. The Academy opened its doors in 1992 in Robert DeNiro‘s Tribeca Film Center. Since that time we have grown into our own facilities in Manhattan‘s Union Square and Soho. We also opened Film Academies at Universal Studios in Los Angeles and London UK, England. We hold One-Year and short-term programs throughout the year in these locations. During the summer we offer our short-term programs at a number of additional locations,
including Harvard University; Disney-MGM Studios-Florida; Paris, France; and Florence, Italy.

Each year hundreds of students of all occupations, races, ethnicities, and of a wide range of ages from around the world benefit from the extraordinary education offered at the New York Film Academy. Today, little more than a decade after the first students graduated, the New York Film Academy is considered one of the most prominent fixtures of film education in the world.

THE ACTING SCHOOL PROGRAMS AT NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY
Here’s why the Film School at The New York Film Academy is on the cutting-edge of actor training:
PRACTICAL ON-CAMERA EXPERIENCE. The best way to learn how to act in films is to actually work on films. That is why we provide our acting students with as much practical film set experience as possible, which in conjunction with the New York Film Academy Film School program, we can do more than any other acting school in the world.
DYNAMIC FACULTY. Our instructors are working veterans of Hollywood and independent film, Broadway and Off-Broadway who teach because they love to teach.
NO AUDITIONS. Our open admission policy allows anyone to enter our acting school programs regardless of previous experience. Our teachers specialize in bringing our diverse and eclectic groups of acting school students to the peak of their abilities, no matter what level they are at when they enter.
REEL MATERIALS. We provide all of our acting school students with professionally shot and edited materials that are suitable to put on an actor’s reel, one of the primary ways that actors get work in the real world.
ORIGINAL WORK, PROFESSIONALLY PRODUCED. Many of our film school programs feature the production of original short films or scenes that are created by and starring our acting school students, then shot and edited together by a semi-professional film crew.
FILMMAKING RESOURCES. Our Acting for Film School and Film School programs work hand-in-hand, providing all of our acting and film students resources such as film equipment, live film shoots, and a network of filmmakers, screenwriters, producers, and editors that is developed before entering the real world.
Former New York Film Academy Graduate, Paul Dano played a preacher in the award-winning film "There Will Be Blood."
Designed equally for beginning actors as well as those with experience, our Acting for Film School programs provide actors not only with modern on-camera acting techniques but also a foundation of acting training rooted in time-honored theatrical traditions. Our instructors are all professional working actors, writers, directors, and producers—veterans of Hollywood, independent film, television, Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional theater—and they give each student the personal focus and rigorous discipline necessary for launching a career in film and television.
In addition to full immersion in the craft of acting, we also believe that well-trained actors are made even better by understanding all of the rigors and nuances of a professional film set. Better than any other school in the world, the Acting School at the New York Film Academy is equipped to provide all of our acting students with a real-life professional filmmaking experience. Actors work closely with the film School students in class as well as in on-location short film productions. In the process, important networks are formed between screenwriters, directors, producers and editors. Unlike other acting schools, we provide all of our acting students with a basic education in a variety of filmmaking crafts: directing, producing, screenwriting, and many different crew positions. Students come away from the Acting for Film School program not only with solid acting training, but with practical filmmaking experience under their belt as well.
ONE-YEAR ACTING PROGRAM, 28 College Credits
The New York Film Academy is proud to offer its extraordinarily popular One-Year Acting for Film program. The One-Year program is unlike any other actor-training program in the world — a cutting-edge exploration into the art and practice of acting for the screen. The One-Year program runs on an eight-month calendar, divided into two 16-week semesters. Each of the 16-week semesters requires intensive time demands and a complete commitment on the part of the student. A standard week of study involves classes, rehearsals, and shoots that may take place during weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
The first semester concentrates on building a foundation in the craft of acting, using training techniques rooted in the theater but applicable to screen acting. Students participate in a broad array of core classes that introduce them to finding the actor within, while simultaneously training their instrument to do the kind of
technical, emotional, and physical work necessary for film acting. Since we believe that film actors benefit immeasurably from working in front of a live audience, all of the training in the first semester builds towards a live performance of scene work.
In the second semester, the core classes continue as the students’ focus intensifies on applying the techniques they have learned to more elaborate scene work, on-camera exercises, and film shoots — all designed to develop and hone their screen-acting ability. During the second semester, all students perform in a short film production, oftentimes original work that was created and developed by the students in collaboration with their instructors. In addition, a variety of classes are given in order to broaden students’ knowledge of acting techniques, the film business, and many different film crafts. And, as in the first semester, the second semester culminates in a live showcase of scenes for family, friends, classmates, and industry contacts.
TWO-YEAR CONSERVATORY ACTING FOR FILM PROGRAM, 56 College Credits
The Film Academy’s Two-Year Conservatory Acting for Film Program is a unique opportunity for students to explore and master the differences and similarities between stage performance and acting in front of a camera. Students will deepen their knowledge of the craft and gain invaluable experience through advanced scene work and production experience.
The first year follows the curriculum of the One-year Acting for Film Program, and the second year will be comprised of many additional classes including: Advanced Acting Technique: The Method, Physical Theatre, Voice-Over Acting, Character Study, Advanced Scene Study, Advanced Improvisation, Audition Technique and many more!
Students can choose to study at our film schools and acting schools at a variety of locations across the world. Each location offers a variety of workshops, all delivered from the same at the highest standards.
