The Acting Program At...

Augusta State

The Department of Communication and Professional Writing offers programs in all forms of communication, from inter-personal to political, from electronic to theatrical. Our students write public relations releases, magazine articles, songs, and television scripts; they make speeches, perform soliloquies, and narrate documentaries; they produce the college's newspaper, magazine, and plays; they create fundraising and media campaigns for community organizations and use their skills for the betterment of the community.

As a Communication major you specialize in one of six tracks: communication studies, journalism, professional writing, public relations, theatre, and television-cinema. You take courses in basic communication skills and in legal, theoretical and historical aspects of the field. In your courses you can learn how to make a film, write a newspaper story, plan a public relations campaign, or understand someone from another country; you'll study how those kinds of communication affect society, and how society affects communication.

Our graduates work in media offices and organizations all over the state and beyond, enjoying careers that challenge them to be creative in a field that is constantly changing and deeply rewarding.

Acting is a skill that can be taught and sharpened with proper training. We can prepare you for a career in theatre- both on the stage and behind it. You can learn to act, direct, and write for the stage. And you can learn to design and build sets and to design light and sound. Most importantly, you can have the opportunity to develop your skills in front of live audiences on our stages. If you have desire, determination and a strong work ethic, you can do all this in the Theatre track.
