The Acting Program At...

Oglethorpe

While the emphasis in the theatre major is on performance and directing, the department also offers courses in stagecraft, theatre history, Shakespeare, and dramatic literature, as well as regular special topics courses in areas such as  playwriting, feminist theatre, and design.

Coursework is supplemented by workshops aimed at equipping students with the practical skills they will need to make a life in theatre.  Oglethorpe is uniquely positioned to offer these because of its longstanding relationship with Georgia Shakespeare, one of only two LORT theatres (League of Regional Theatres) in Georgia and one of only 100 or so in the nation. As the professional theatre company in residence at Oglethorpe since 1986, Georgia Shakespeare provides the theatre department with the opportunity to supplement coursework and direction by educational professionals with guest directors, occasional instructors, and internship supervisors from Georgia Shakespeare, all for the benefit of Oglethorpe students. Georgia Shakespeare theatre internships are some of the most sought-after opportunities  in the southeast.

Students entering Oglethorpe with a background in theatre, as well as students with an interest but no experience, will find ample opportunities in the theatre program to develop their skills and expertise. Oglethorpe students find their theatre training serves them well whether they choose to continue performance studies after graduation, enter the professional theatre world, or pursue other careers.

The state-of-the-art Conant Performing Arts Center is the home of both the Oglethorpe theatre department  and Georgia Shakespeare. The building includes seminar classrooms, two rehearsal halls, box office, costume and prop storage, scene dock, light and sound production facilities, a number of dressing rooms, as well as faculty and administrative offices. There is one performance area, the magnificent modified-thrust-configuration Conant Stage, which features vom and trap capacities, fly space, and orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony seating for 511 patrons.
