The Department of Mass Communications and Theatre Arts is one of 16 departments within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of West Georgia, an accredited comprehensive senior college within the University System of Georgia. As such, it is subject to the policies and procedures of the University System's Board of Regents.

Mass Communications encompasses elements from both the humanities and the social sciences. Theatre Arts encourages elements from both the humanities and the fine arts. The values, concepts, and skills intrinsic to the disciplines of Mass Communications and Theatre Arts make both of these fields of study vital and integral components of a complete liberal arts education designed to create better citizens in our complex, culturally diverse, and increasingly global society.

The Mission of the University of West Georgia Theatre Program is to educate and inspire students who wish to study the art of theatre. By offering a B.A. degree in theatre, we hope to provide students with a well-rounded education in all areas of theatre arts – production & performance (including acting, directing, and design/technical skills), literature, and history. Providing this type of education will empower individuals to seek careers in theatre, careers related to theatre or other professions.
