The Acting Program At...

In addition to the many practical opportunities that are available to the students at Coe, we are committed to the inseparable connection between academics and practice. The theatre scholars who contribute the most to the discourse within our discipline are those with the greatest practical experience. Likewise, the actors, directors, and designers who make the most lasting impression in our profession tend to be those with the most solid intellectual grounding.

Coe offers a Theatre Arts degree with emphasis in Acting, Directing or with Technical & Design Production emphasis. Additionally, students may opt to focus on the Playwriting or Dramaturgy areas of study.

Staging plays can be a challenging and daunting task, for it requires an understanding of nearly every aspect of theatre art. But because directing involves a wide range of skills, it can be extremely rewarding, especially when all aspects of a production come together successfully. At Coe College, we believe that theatre majors, regardless of their particular interests, should have an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of directing plays for the stage. Thus, all theatre majors, regardless of their areas of emphasis, take Directing I at some time during their four-year stay at Coe
