University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky Department of Theatre is grounded in the belief that theater is a fundamental cultural necessity that enriches all who participate in it.

Our B.A. Degree program emphasizes the interaction of practice and theory and is geared toward students who are interested in theater as a part of a liberal arts education.

With an astounding 6:1 student to faculty ratio, our undergraduate students receive unparalleled mentoring throughout their four years at the University of Kentucky. Students create a program that is unique to their interests and strengths, with freedom to choose between three categories of electives to complete a truly individualized course of study.

The Department of Theatre is oriented toward a multi-cultural world-view, inter-disciplinary collaborations and civic responsibility through Engagement and Service-Learning. Theatre courses emphasize the truly inclusive nature of the art form, which encompasses performance, literature, design, history, artistic community, and intellectual rigor.

Our cutting-edge B.A. degree program is strongly oriented toward interdisciplinary participation and collaboration. Program courses emphasize the truly inclusive nature of theatre, which encompasses performance, literature, design, history, artistic community and intellectual rigor. Students are expected to acquire a solid familiarity with dramatic literature and to develop the ability to research the historical context and dramaturgy of a play and to write about it. They are also encouraged to study abroad in coordination with one of the international theatre courses. In addition, students have opportunities for community engagement through the Social Action Theatre course in projects across the commonwealth.
