About Willamette...

Set in the lush rolling hills of the Pacific Northwest, Willamette University is a nationally recognized liberal arts school with graduate programs in law, business and education.

From the caliber of its students to the level of expertise among its faculty, Willamette University embodies academic excellence. More than 1,800 undergraduates benefit from Willamette’s 11-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and 165 years of tradition as the First University in the West.

Willamette challenges its students to broaden their college experience beyond the classroom. Activities such as study abroad, one-on-one research with a faculty member, debate tournaments in Eastern Europe and choir performances in South Africa all contribute to the liberal arts education offered at Willamette University.

Our students embody Willamette’s motto: “Not Unto Ourselves Alone Are We Born.” Each year, undergraduate and graduate students volunteer more than 31,000 hours on a variety of projects including building homes for Habitat for Humanity, feeding and clothing the homeless, providing pro bono legal work, and assisting local and regional businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Support from Willamette’s alumni and friends contribute to an atmosphere of excellence. Last August Willamette welcomed students to the new $14 million housing project – Kaneko Commons. Willamette’s Division III athletics and intramurals benefited from a renovation of the soccer field, including state-of-art lighting and artificial turf, allowing for year-round competition. All of these improvements contribute to Willamette’s exceptional academic experience.

The Acting Program At...

Willamette University

Theatre at Willamette

The theatre program at Willamette University offers a Theatre major with emphases in acting, performance, and design, or the option to craft and propose to the department faculty an individual emphasis. A faculty, staff and guest artists with extensive academic and professional experience teach a wide-ranging curriculum, providing the student with a rich variety of perspectives from which to learn. Theatre is a vital part of the liberal arts experience at the University through the public performances of four plays and a dance concert per year, as well as student-created projects and the wide array of classes available to majors and non-majors alike.

Students majoring in Theatre
are provided with a range of experiences within all areas of the theatre: acting, directing, stagecraft, costume construction, design, dramaturgy, lighting, voice, movement, theatre history, and dramatic literature. It is the department's intent to train Theatre majors in all aspects of the discipline during their four years at Willamette, thereby creating a well-rounded theatre artist. Just as the liberal arts environment provides the student with insight into and an understanding of a variety of subjects, the Theatre Department strives to create an environment conducive to the individual growth of the student within the context of the most collaborative of the arts disciplines.

The time spent in a university is valuable not only for the particular instruction a student receives; it also serves as a time of great personal growth and heightened self-awareness. The theatre department supports this matriculation in ways both tangible and intangible. The great amount of work done in the department in classes and with mainstage productions demands that the students budget and prioritize their time and energy. Truly, there is no class or subject irrelevant to the study of theatre, and the department's outlook reflects this respect for our place as an integral and vital part of the College of Liberal Arts. Students are expected to develop a high level of self-discipline in the theatre department. Pride of commitment to the work and the willingness to take on the responsibility that comes with being part of an ensemble are tangible rewards that students will carry with them long after graduation. Also, classes offered through the theatre department meet several General Education (Modes of Inquiry) requirements.

In addition to the permanent faculty, there is a guest artist program, providing students the opportunity to learn from and work closely with theatre artists currently working in the profession. Two or three guest artists each year, in the capacity of actors, directors, designers or choreographers, are invited to take up residency for the duration of a production. During that six week period, the guest artists are also involved in the teaching of classes and workshops. Members of the Theatre faculty approach their work with a high level of professionalism and the expectation that the type of student Willamette University attracts will embrace the demanding yet rewarding opportunities that lie ahead, and rise to meet and learn from those myriad challenges.

The four mainstage productions are selected with care to provide the students with experience in a wide range of theatrical styles. From the Greeks to Shakespeare to the most recent contemporary works by respected modern playwrights, the emphasis is on producing exciting interpretations of well-written texts. The department reaches out to the school community through matinee performances offered specifically for high school audiences. Theatre is a vibrant, exciting, challenging department filled with faculty and students striving to continue the journey of discovery and interaction with our fellow humans that leads to greater understanding of ourselves, our neighbors and our world.

The Willamette Playhouse is the home of Willamette Theatre classes, workshops and productions. The building includes a dance studio, acting studio, costume shop, prop storage, makeup room, scene shop, film studies room, light and sound production facilities, dressing rooms, classrooms, and faculty offices. There are two performance areas: the 250-seat thrust configuration Kresge Theatre and the Arena Theatre, which features flexible seating of up to 125.

Scholarship

The Willamette Theatre scholarship is a merit-based scholarship offered to applicants with a serious commitment to theatre. To be eligible for scholarships, students must be accepted to Willamette University, demonstrate outstanding achievement in theatre, and plan to devote major attention to the theatre program at Willamette. The scholarships are renewable based on annual evaluations by the faculty.

Application for the Theatre Scholarship consists of the following: Completed Scholarship Application form. A minimum of two Scholarship Reference forms, completed by people knowledgeable about the student's theatrical background, such as a director or theatre teacher. For actors: an audition consisting of a Shakespearean monologue 20-30 lines in length and a one-minute contemporary monologue. An optional two-minute song may be performed if the student desires. A stereo will be provided but the student should bring his or her own tape or CD accompaniment. For design/technical students: please assemble a portfolio of your work which you will have fifteen minutes to present to the faculty. An interview with the faculty.

Auditioning for the Scholarship: In order for the theatre faculty to get a better idea of your experience and level of interest (and also so that you have an opportunity to get to know us) we urge you to attend an audition/interview on campus. We strongly encourage you to attend our spring audition days, but if you cannot visit the University on those dates it may be possible to arrange another time to audition and meet some of the faculty and students. If visiting is impossible, you may submit a video taped audition or your portfolio by mail and conduct your interview with the faculty over the phone. Please contact us as soon as possible if you would like a Scholarship Application form and Reference forms sent to you. You can reach us by email: theatrerecruitment@willamette.edu or by phone: 503-370-6222.

More information on scholarship requirements can be found in the Student Handbook Online (pdf).

Guest Artists, 2007-2008 Season

One very significant component that leads to the high quality of the artistic endeavors of the Theatre Department at Willamette is the contribution made by guest artists. Faculty, staff, and students are unanimous in their agreement that the presence of the guest artists, as both teachers and fellow artists makes a vital and very special difference in program. This difference is reflected in what our students learn, create, and achieve in the classroom, in the rehearsal room, and on the stage. It is also what makes the theatre experience unique at an intimate, demanding liberal arts school like Willamette, since students gain performance and training excellence in a simultaneously broad and committed liberal arts context. In the 2007-2008 Season, our guest artists will include: Raissa Fleming, Nick Zagone, Marc Friedman and Karen Vacarro!
