For almost 90 years, Seton Hill University has remained committed to one simple goal – providing students with a Catholic, liberal arts education in the best tradition of our founders, the Sisters of Charity. We do this by making one guiding principle a part of all that we teach. Instilled in our graduates, in our faculty, and in our history is a point of view that embraces change and welcomes the very same adversity many of us seek to avoid. Symbolized by our campus’ scenic hilltop location, it is a point of view that has the power to transform the toughest challenges into timely opportunities . . . to turn everyday problems into unexpected potential. It’s a perspective that will change the way you look at everything. From here, your world truly opens up.

The Acting Program At...
Seton Hill University

Thanks for visiting us! We invite you to check out our program and what we have to offer. The Seton Hill University Theatre Program has long been committed to both the study and practice of theatre and drama as disciplines of the fine arts and the humanities. Our challenging and forward-thinking program leads to a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre. Here, in the company of people with a passion for theatre, you will enjoy an environment that nurtures your intellect, your imagination, and your aspirations. Areas of Study... The core major is Theatre Arts which is a general program that allows a student to choose a second major or minor in another discipline, or to select an emphasis in Theatre/Business, Theatre Performance, Music/Theatre, Technical Theatre, or Theatre/Education. The interdisciplinary Theatre/Business emphasis prepares students to work in theatre administration, marketing, public relations or stage management. The Theatre Performance curriculum prepares students for careers as professional performers. The interdisciplinary Music/Theatre curriculum prepares theatre performance majors to compete as actors/singers in the musical theatre. The Technical Theatre curriculum prepares students for careers in scenery, lighting, costume, sound or technical direction. The Theatre/Education curriculum prepares future teachers by combining the Theatre Arts Major with the desired certification curriculum in the Education Program. The two campus theatres, Reeves Theatre and the St. Mary Studio, both noteworthy for their intimacy, are supported by complete makeup, costume, and set construction facilities. Seton Hill University is preparing to open our new University Center for the Performing Arts. The projected $21 million dollar performing arts complex is designed by MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni Architects, and will be located in the Cultural District of downtown Greensburg. It will house complete performance, support, and academic space for the programs of music and theatre. The location of the building brings it together with the Palace Theatre and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, creating a vibrant and dynamic arts district. Although within walking distance of the main campus, continuous shuttle service will be available to further link the main and downtown campuses. The building will include: To be accepted into the Theatre Program, all applicants must successfully complete an interview with members of the Theatre faculty. Additionally, Technical Theatre students are required to complete a portfolio review and Theatre Performance and Music/Theatre students are required to audition to apply for acceptance into these majors. Students with intentions to major in Theatre Arts or Theatre/Business are required to interview only. However, ALL students desiring to compete for merit-based scholarships are required to audition or present a portfolio. (Theatre Arts and Theatre/Business majors can choose the audition or the portfolio review.) What do you need to do for the audition and interview? Your audition should consist of two blocked and thoroughly memorized pieces, each about one-and-a-half minutes long; the first selection should be a monologue from a full-length play; the second selection may be another monologue of a contrasting type, a song from a musical (required of Music/Theatre applicants), a dance routine, or a demonstration of another performance skill. Consult your teachers for suggestions. Songs must be performed with recorded instrumental accompaniment; please bring your own player. How do you schedule your audition? Auditions or portfolio reviews and interviews with facilities tours are scheduled by appointment September 15 through April 30. Applicants wishing to compete for theatre scholarships should complete the process prior to February 25. Audition or portfolio reviews last about five minutes, the interview about forty-five minutes. Please allow additional time if you choose to schedule other meetings and campus or facilities tours on the same day. Auditions of portfolio reviews and interviews cannot be scheduled evenings, weekends, or during university vacations. Lively classes, rehearsals, and productions are an essential and very exciting part of your experience as a theatre student. The performance and technical opportunities for theatre majors at Seton Hill are abundant, and our standards are professional. Each year our program presents four full-length productions, as well as a number of shorter works. In order that students better understand and appreciate theatre's many dimensions, all theatre majors engage in every facet of production - from creating costumes, to designing and building sets, to engineering lighting and sound.

The interview will be conducted by the Program Director or a delegated faculty member, and it is followed by the audition or portfolio review. The Program Diretor will notify you of the results within two weeks. Scholarship awards are usually announced by March 1. If you cannot come audition or present your portfolio in person, an alternative means to fulfill the requirement is to furnish a high-quality VHS videotape of your audition or portfolio. All videotapes submitted become property of the Theatre Program and are, therefore, not returned. If you choose the videotape option, you may be granted conditional acceptance until your interview is completed no later than the first week of your first semester.
