The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is an extensive, diverse and thriving community dedicated to teaching, scholarship, artistic expression, public service, and professional practice. Founded in 1794, two years before statehood was achieved, it is the statewide university’s main campus and ranks as one of the nation’s top 10 educational values. One hundred countries are represented among the 19,000 undergraduates and 7,000 graduate students who attend UT Knoxville.
The Department of Theatre at the University of Tennessee consists of a full-time faculty of twelve, offering a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and a Master of Fine Arts degrees in Acting and Theatre Design. All faculty members are practicing professional artists as well as dedicated teachers. Seven faculty members teach acting, directing, history and literature of the theatre, while five teach design and technology.
The Department of Theatre operates The Clarence Brown Theatre, a LORT D Equity theatre, to foster professional standards in the curriculum and to serve the greater East Tennessee Community with national caliber theatre. Students enjoy significant production opportunities in a diverse season of plays and musicals at The Clarence Brown, and in Rehearsal Projects and University Productions. Rehearsal projects are performed by graduate actors; undergraduate students run the All Campus Theatre; and both graduate and undergraduate actors, designers and students work in University Productions.
International theatre exchange is a hallmark of the department. Students regularly work with distinguished artists in Knoxville and abroad, travel in study-abroad programs, and observe or work with international touring productions.
