The Acting Program At...

At Stephen F. Austin State University, students learn theatre by doing theatre.  We produce 25-30 shows per year, ranging from student-directed, studio-scale short plays to major musicals and Shakespearean productions directed by faculty and other professionals in our 1000-seat main-stage theatre.

Our exceptional international programs offer students opportunities to study in Ireland, England, Spain and Estonia, and to work alongside international students spending the year studying American theatre with us in Texas.  Candidates for our BFA degrees get year-long internships at major regional theatres such as Milwaukee Repertory Theater, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Arizona Theatre Company in Phoenix and Tucson, Dallas Children’s Theatre and the Alley Theatre in Houston. 

World-renowned artists such as legendary screen actor Anthony Zerbe and playwrights Tina Howe, David Ives and James McLure visit campus to teach workshops and work as guest artists.  Members of our award-winning faculty have Broadway, off-Broadway and Hollywood credits.  Our teacher certification candidates work in our extensive K-12 programs, and enjoy a 100% placement rate in public school jobs within one year of graduation. 

We offer five degree tracks: the BA in theatre with a wide range of minor and double-major programs available; the BA in Theatre Education with all-level teacher certification; and the BFA chosen from three concentrations: Acting & Directing, Technical Theatre & Design, and Stage Management.
